Crispy Onion Rings Recipe (Print Version)
Ingredients:
01 -
2 ½ cups flour.
02 -
3 tablespoons seasoned salt.
03 -
2 tablespoons yellow corn meal.
04 -
2 teaspoons black pepper.
05 -
2 teaspoons paprika.
06 -
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper.
07 -
2 onions sliced into ⅓-½ inch rings.
08 -
1 cup buttermilk.
09 -
Vegetable oil for frying.
Instructions:
01 -
Combine flour, seasoned salt, corn meal, black pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper in a paper bag and shake well to mix.
02 -
Dip each onion ring into the seasoned flour, then into buttermilk, and again into the seasoned flour, making sure all sides are coated. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
03 -
Prepare a pot with 3 to 3 ½ inches of oil for frying and heat over medium-high heat. Also, preheat the oven to 275 degrees to keep the onion rings warm after frying.
04 -
Fry the onion rings in batches of four to avoid overcrowding, cooking until golden brown on each side, then transfer to paper towels to drain.
05 -
Place the finished onion rings on a parchment-lined baking sheet in the oven to stay warm. Serve once all rings are fried.
Notes:
01 -
Soak onion slices in ice water for 15 minutes to reduce their sharpness.
02 -
Use one hand for dry coating and the other hand for wet to avoid clumpy breading.
03 -
Choose high-heat refined oils like safflower or peanut for frying without flavor alteration.
04 -
Avoid overcrowding the pot when frying to maintain oil temperature and prevent sticking.
05 -
Cut onion rings evenly, using a mandolin if desired, for uniform cooking.
